Like I said, I'm cool with that. If you take the WC3 models for they priestess and mage (I'm not sure what the exact name is, bother are basic human spellcasters) they both look similar (high elves). Those 2 being given as 2 skins for the same hero is okay. That is what it sounds like LoL is doing, which is okay. Now if they added another skin which looked like an orc raider or something, which is a different race, different size, and it's attack animation is radically different (throws stones as opposed to casting little energy balls), there's room for confusion. It does NOT sound like LoL is doing that. So again, LoL is okay.

BUUUUT, the ability to permanently unlock heroes who might be unavailable to other players is a no-no. Tolerable in a free game, but not in a game I'm expected to play for. If I have to pay $15+, any advantage, even as small as that, should not be possible via micro-transactions.

dont worry mumble... im sure the re-models would prolly have the same attack and casting animations..... and the female pyro is the same race as the male pyro... it's just the ssex is changed and maybe  the clothing is abit different...... incases of magmus changed to crixxalis i think the dota characters will be bought into hon...... so there wont be any confusion there..... where magebane is anti mage, valk is potm.... i think that's how its gonna be done..... and pyro to female pyro and stuff like that..... dont worry about it too much :D i think everything would be available to buy ingame with ingame gold or real money if ur impatient..... either way everything is obtainable by everyone i think....

well I heard that now those Exp hacks aren't gonna work because of the new update Garena has put. And in LoL you don't get exp hacks, and even if you have Exp hacks, you need to have have Influence Points or Riot Points to unlock stuff, So it's hack proof :) :)

LoL had this correct me if I'm wrong pls.

yup LoL has a summoner lvling up method, the maximum lvl you can lvl up is lvl 30

False. There are still EXP hacks. Everytime Garena updates, the hack updates one day later. It's not that bad since it's mainly just exp and rarely Map Hack.

But still kinda annoying when you play for so long to reach level 30+ and some guy who plays for a couple of months is now lvl 40+ :S

I 100% agree with Mumble. It's what turned me off from DotA after i spent just 1 night with HON. Don't think wrong. :P But, anyways, the connection was much better, i could come back after i dced. The whole processed seemed much better. If steam incorporates what HON did to accommodate for these pesky little problems in DotA, (Which they probably and will do), the result is a great game with a great background played by a great community.

In case anyone else is a stats-hound like me, here's a comparison of Google search volume between the 4 mobas...

Blue - Dota
Red - League of Legends
Yellow - Heroes of Newerth
Green - Dota2

Original query:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=dota%2C+league+of+legends%2C+heroes+of+newerth%2C+dota2&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

The inverse proportion between growth in LoL and drop in HoN searches is quite interesting...

HoN by no means is dying - you can see that by the number of competitive tournaments that are picking up the game. I guess there are other factors at play that explain the drop in searches? Maybe people are getting used to calling it "HoN" ?

Also, I don't think LoL spike has any relation to the HoN drop - LoL searches had been rising steadily from release.

Agreed that there's a margin of error with the short forms of the games taking up part of the search volume. I'll say though that I see many more LoL ads online than HoN ads, via gaming sites, facebook and the like.

Perhaps general awareness of LoL is much greater than HoN bc of a stronger advertising campaign? I get the impression Riot always was a bigger company than S2, so maybe they have a bigger marketing budget. WCG picked up LoL in its promotional tournament, and apparently LoL was bought by Tencent, a major gaming company in China, for 350 mill.

Dying out? No. The HoN fanbase is quite loyal. I'm not sure its growing at the pace of LoL and, in the future, Dota2.

Agreed.

LoL = free. You can't beat that when it comes to gaining a player base. Also, Dota 2 = icefrog / valve - two heroes of the game industry working together.

S2Games really had to start from scratch with nothing to build off of... so I guess the fact that they've come this far is commendable.

that's not technically true
IceFrog worked with S2 for a period before dodging out
