New maps for DOTA2?
« on: December 03, 2010, 12:16:15 PM »
Should DOTA2 feature new maps with new possibilities? Or just stick to the one map and keep on improving it?

IMO they should push the 'genre' of two teams of 5 fighting each other on various terrains rather than the specific map. Think CoD4 or CS. A number of unique maps keeps the game interesting.

Discuss.

Maybe just a map editor open to the modding community (DotA was, after all, created by modders).

I think it should stick to the same basic terrain. Obv with enhanced graphics but the principles should remain unchanged.

Having new maps will prob make DotA 2 too much of a diff from the original DotA. I would prefer it if all the fog of war tricks we’ve learned still remain, and with new maps I can hardly see that happening.

Then again, Learning new tricks might be cool as well.

The basic "mid", "bot", "top", "jungle" and "river" terms have been globally accepted and changing the map would change that too right?

I dunno, I guess everything will have it's advantages and disadvantages. Let's see which will overrule the other.

There have been plenty of other WC3 mods, so if you want something new, by all means try those. DotA's main shortcoming in the eyes of tournament holders was it's age. Or rather, the age of the game it was based on. That's the issue that needed to be addressed for the DotA community, and that's what Valve needs to focus on. They need to make sure it's an easy transition for DotA players. And on top of that, some shiny graphics and new features to reel in more players (we all know how steep the learning curve for DotA is).

Source?

DotA 2 should definitely feature more than just the one default one. For example, HoN is releasing their map editor along with a tower defence map soon, which is going to be EPIC. With Valve's history of being very community centric, I'm fairly certain they will open up DotA 2 to be modded and a map editor etc as one of their priorities.

IMO they should just set teh engine for this type of gameplay rather than rely on the map itself.
HoN did the right thing by making a map maker (one more weeeek).
Valve should release the game with a map maker to make this type of game really easy to do and add the usual dota map and a few others as standard maps. Let the community add new maps. Kinda like CS as mentioned above.
They should make the game like a game rather than a glorified map.

See in DotA, the community anyway adds their own new maps. (Pudge Wars, Hungry hungry, Jungle Race, FuFu Ninjas,  moo-moo and warlock To name a few)

And apparently since IceFrog is trying to keep this as close to DotA as he can, those features prob will be there.

But Zero was referring to making changes into the actual DotA map. Which i think should not happen. Like i said, it changes the whole game.

Also, how epic would it be if DotA 2 had singleplayer? Actually now that I think about it, singelplayer storyline for DotA seems exactly like something Valve would do. EPIX. Will start a new topic to discuss that.

No actually. I definitely want to have the original DotA map unchanged. I just like new maps, with the exact same gameplay mechanics.

See none of these maps have the actual gameplay of DotA. The change the gameplay as well. They are completely different.

Sticking to the CoD4 example, If the original DotA was a S&D in Crash, then I want to play S&D on Strike, Backlot or whatever. Currently you cant do it. You try another map, you cant get the same gameplay. FuFu ninja's is like a OHK deathmatch in Shipment. Onca kinda got what I'm saying.

HoN currently does this. It has released a 3v3 map and is releasing a few other maps that follow the same DotA style (farm, push towers, destroy throne) but with varying speed in the gameplay depending on the size of the map (e.g smaller map - faster ganks etc).

So in short we all agree that releasing one map designed to mimic DotA as much as possible is the best way to go, along with making the world editor open for free use.

IMO if they try to make a campaign and all, it'll be more like a re-make of WC3 than DotA, except the WC3 part is an add-on to DotA, not vice versa. Also, a campaign is impractical since there are ~100 characters of arguably equal importance. They'd have to select a few heroes to be "main" characters and the rest as NPCs. They could make the story shadow WC, but no-one like plagiarism (in this context anyway, the whole remake DotA plagiarism is fine by me) and the altered models would lead to problems. And the cost of hiring story writers and all probably wouldn't be worth it since a majority of early adopters will only be interested in the DotA part.

So once again, the best thing they can do is make the world editor open and hope the community comes up with something in the form of a campaign. Maybe they could hire someone who makes something promising.

Well if they could introduce a DotA map themed in winter? catch my drift. kind of pointless but that way players can get ideas on how to create interesting spinoff maps.

Also use the same map with the same positioning (lanes, river, shops) but instead of having it in a forest change it something like lava for water or maybe something creative just to keep players interested at least when they are bored.
Coz in CS especially when people get bored believe me it gets boring the admin changes the map to poolday or iceworld or something totally different (bhop map) and the players just start fragging the crap out of each other having fun at the same time.

When I started playing DotA it was a snow covered map :D And some releases allowed snow/terrain effects. So I guess no harm done if they release some. but again, I think community mods will do this like they did in DotA.

well i think dota 2.0 can do some thing like in LoL

in LoL u get the same map but 3 versions (summer, autumn, winter) it's the same map with a different skin and doodads

this way all the terminology stays the same, all the juking and fow tricks stay the same.... but it gives a diff feel to the map....

even in dota there was the terrain snow and rain and wind and snow options u can use in the map which was quite fun....

even hon has 2 maps..... the 2nd map i must say was pretty decent... not many ppl play that cos lets face it... humans rnt adaptive to change... they like some thing they will stick to it without giving anything else a chance.....

but i must say the 2nd map in hon was nicely done
