The sequel to Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) will be free-to-play "with a twist", according to the co-founder of Valve, Gabe Newell.

Speaking on a yet to be released podcast shared by the producers early with Polygon, Newell told Seven Day Cooldown that the PC and Mac-compatible real-time strategy game will use a free-to-play funding model, but one that hasn't been used in any other game before.
"It's going to be free-to-play -- it'll have some twists, but that's the easiest way for people to think about it," Newell said.

The full podcast from Seven Day Cooldown will be released later today.

Free to play - no surprise there. Looking forward to see what crazy business model Valve comes up with :D

What i feel is,

The basic AP game with all (or a limited number) of heroes will be free to play. So you can download the game and play it with your buddies fro free.

However, for other features, you have to pay. Such as matchmaking, game modes, heroes, hats, skins, alt avatars, taunt etc. This is very similar to HoN/LoL.

The 'twist' will be a rating system (commendations anyone?) which allows users to unlock those for free or a lower price by providing some criteria to be achieved (eg: +20 leadership will give you 20% discount on a certain feature).

I don't think Valve will ever paywall any of the features in Dota 2. The twist will be nothing like what HoN/LoL/EA do to their customers. Good guy Valve - have hope.

As opposed to DotA's parent game, which was run by saintly blizzard; who had no intention of abandoning the epic storyline and the huge RTS fanbase of Warcraft 3, by making the sequel a soul crushing profit machine that would effectively kill off the series... And then go on to destroy LAN play and promote episodic SP content that cost as much as a standalone game where they couldn't charge subscriptions...

[Disclaimer: Not to say WoW isn't a good game in its own right. It just wasn't the spiritual successor to War3. Look at SC2. That's what the Warcraft series needed.]

Doesn't LoL have a limited hero pool for free accounts or something (like the new HoN)? IMO that gives paying players a pretty big advantage. I hope valve doesn't hide anything more than purely cosmetic items behind any paywall (like the HoN store or hatteam fortress 2).

uhh no what he was saying was that free players are limited to part of the roster of champions and have to pay real money to get access to more. In LOL u have the option to buy the champs with ingame cash or real cash... yall are saying it like LOL is pay to win which it is far from

As you do in HoN as well...but the fact remains you can buy ALL the heroes at once much quicker  and 'quantitatively' cheaper with real, ie the advantage he spoke of

You are still restricted to whatever that weeks heroes are unless you play enough to buy all the heroes.
if you're not a complete no-lifer its going to take you several months to get them all playing only a game or two a day.

So yeah, mumble is still correct

As expected, the original game was f2p. though knowing valve i would have thought their would be some kind of payments involved weather it was in game or out....

i'm hoping they develop alt avatars and other novelty things in game's that would keep the new players and older players interested, though before all that they need to work on their match making system the most, being paired with people that are new and have little to no experience and have play barley any games with people that have played a lot of games is really annoying even though their are many new players, their needs to be a new match making system, maybe even the likes of LoL with the levels? or even hon with the points ( 1500 )...  where more experienced players play with more experienced players and so forth .... as we all know it only takes that one person to ruin a perfectly good game. and for me, if i had decent games with people of the similar skill and lost to the opposing team with people of the similar skill but it was an awesome game, i would want to keep playing.. but usually when i play with someone under leveled and lose for stupid reason's i honestly don't feel like playing and get bored
