Before getting a beta key I had never used steam; in fact i'd never realyl heard of it.  Now I have steam and have purchased around $80 worth of games including on Other valve titles (Portal1/2).  Thats the real business beauty of the steam/F2P model that people forget about.  Valve basically made money directly because of Dota 2 even though I didnt pay for Dota 2 itself.

I worry that the F2P model increases the chances of Trolls.  Personally, I would like to see a small fee (maybe like $8) just to discourage people having multiple troll accounts.

On the other side of the argument, if you make something free then you take away the "I paid for this game and demand x" debates.

You know what, I agree 100%. I had a steam account for a while, but only started using it regularly after Dota 2. And so far, I myself have spent quite a bit of money picking up cheap games I normally wouldnt have done.

As you do in HoN as well...but the fact remains you can buy ALL the heroes at once much quicker  and 'quantitatively' cheaper with real, ie the advantage he spoke of

You are still restricted to whatever that weeks heroes are unless you play enough to buy all the heroes.
if you're not a complete no-lifer its going to take you several months to get them all playing only a game or two a day.

So yeah, mumble is still correct

"Doesn't LoL have a limited hero pool for free accounts or something (like the new HoN)?" It was a question, not a statement, so I don't see how he could be correct. Sure, you only have access to the weekly rotation if you don't spend time playing but that just means spending time playing is rewarding, unlike HoN where you have to pay to unlock every hero. Sure, you can pay in LoL to fast-track it but every account is essentially a 'free' account and if you want to buy every hero in LoL then you would realise it takes a lot. Most casual players find a few heroes they like and purchase only them.

1. Reaffirmiing an assumption is not the same as a question.
2. HoN has a weekly rotation as well, the systems are exactly the same, both rotate heroes every week, both can buy heroes with real money or by playing the game for in-game currency.

To be able to download a F2P game on steam, you have to have bought or own a game on steam, menaing you have to have spent money that benefits valve to be able to download a f2p title. Its the same for TF2 and will probably be the same for Dota 2 when that goes F2P.

meaning you can't just get a steam account to play dota 2. You have to have buy a game before playing dota 2.

Edit: I am talking about when the game actually is released, not now in Beta.

False. I'm sure I had at least 3 f2p games on steam before I bought anything (TMNF, Spiral Knightst and RoI).

That is not true. A lot of people getting on Dota 2 are first time Steam users with no actualy money spent on Steam.

Yeah you don't have to buy anything t download F2P games from steam
You also don't have to buy games to be able to add friends; there's like 4 different ways to add someone as a friend and it only stops me from doing it one way

on the LoL topic :) i think LoL's version of f2p is better than HoN's cos in LoL both teams can pick the same hero so sides can be balanced even tho its a hero rotation method, where as in HoN one side picks the OP hero and the other side cant...which means even tho both games have a hero rotation method. LoL has more heroes to chose from seing as both sides can pick the same hero....

about dota2... im glad in a way its f2p cos i have to save money for gw2 and d3 xD but yea... f2p == troll city... wonder what the twist is gonna be tho. Hope its a good twist lol..... i hate bad surprises : / and i like the new hud :) finally lol and props to the new item icons as well xD now all they need to do is make the graphics shiny like HoN and im fully satisfied :p

and i dont c y wow is a bad successor for wc3 :) they had to tap into the mmo market before too many companies started.... and what better game than warcraft? its a good game with tons of lore and a big fan base :) sc alone didnt have enough lore to fit a whole mmo... and in the case of diablo.... well at the end of diablo2 LoD, the story pretty much ended there lol.....which is y im curious as to what the new  plot of d3 is seing as all the prime evils were defeated and the world stone shattered at the end of diablo2 LoD. so yea i think wow was a good choice :)

False. I'm sure I had at least 3 f2p games on steam before I bought anything (TMNF, Spiral Knightst and RoI).

I am just speaking from experience. I have had steam for like 7-8 years, but my younger brother who got steam the other year just to play TF2 couldn't until he either owned a paid for game on steam, or bought one. He could't add friends either for the same reason. That doesn't mean there weren't ways around it. I added him, and other people could add him, and so he still got friends in the beginning. Then I sent a game to him as a gift, and after that he could download any f2p games on steam.

So if you have a bought game, even if it isn't a valve title, and you add it to steam then it also counts as a bought title and enables u to use all the features of steam.

That is not true. A lot of people getting on Dota 2 are first time Steam users with no actualy money spent on Steam.
It is different with Dota 2 since it is a beta. You do not add it yourself to your games, it is sent to you by Valve. Dota 2 does not count as a f2p title yet. That is also something I don't really know for sure, but I would assume that first time users who get dota 2 can then get other titles because Dota 2 counts as a game owned, and enables you to add friends as well as download any material on steam. However that is just my assumption since that is how it normally works with other games sent as "gifts" on steam.
